Hyaluronic acid gets sold as the hydration ingredient -- the one that holds up to a thousand times its weight in water. That part is true. What the bottle never says is where the water comes from.
Where the water actually comes from
HA is a humectant, which means it attracts and binds water rather than supplying any. The StatPearls dermatology reference on moisturizers is unusually blunt about what that means in practice: humectants "can hydrate the skin if the humidity is more than 70%; more commonly, however, they draw water from the deeper epidermis and dermis." It goes on to note that some humectants can actually increase water loss through the skin and make dryness worse "without concomitant use of an occlusive moisturizer."
So a humectant on bare skin isn't adding hydration. It's relocating it -- pulling water up toward the surface, where it either stays put or evaporates depending entirely on whether anything is holding it there.
Does This Matter in Singapore?
You'd think not. The Meteorological Service puts Singapore's mean annual relative humidity around 82% -- comfortably above the threshold where a humectant can pull moisture from the air rather than from you. On paper, HA has an easy job here.
Except almost nobody spends the day outdoors. Singapore's humidity swings from above 90% just before sunrise down to roughly 60% on a dry afternoon, and an air-conditioned office is drier still, because cooling air wrings the moisture out of it. You apply the serum in a humid bathroom and then spend nine hours in conditions closer to a temperate winter. That gap is the whole problem, and it's why "but it's humid here" turns out to be the wrong reason to skip the sealing step.
The one extra step
Apply HA to skin that's still slightly damp from cleansing, then follow it with a moisturiser before it dries down. The damp skin gives the humectant something to bind other than your dermis; the cream on top stops the whole thing evaporating off. Both halves matter, and neither takes extra time.
The better-built hydration products have already solved the sequencing for you. Hyaluronic acid is a delivery step, not a finishing one. Damp skin underneath, moisturiser on top -- that's the difference between hydrating your face and just moving water around on it.
